About the Artist
Deborah Setser:
Visual Artist, Workshop Instructor, Speaker/Demo Artist and Art Coach
Deborah Setser is a passionate visual artist who has become an integral part of the Tyler, Texas, artistic community. Originally from Southern California, Deborah embarked on her artistic journey late in life during a devastating period. What started as a hobby blossomed into a passionate career as she discovered the profound healing power of art. Despite initial doubts about her artistic capabilities, art instruction from a friend led her to explore painting and continued on a self-taught path for many years. She is currently honing her skills through formal art education at the Stabat Mater Foundation Atelier Program, where she is mentored by Robert Puschautz.
Although portraiture is her primary focus, she is also inspired by the dynamic qualities of water, which encourages her to explore various subjects and genres. She takes pleasure in transforming the two-dimensional canvas through the interplay of color and value to create an illusion of three-dimensions.
Deborah is a member of the Portrait Society of America and the Palette of Roses Art League, where she also serves on the executive board. Additionally, she plays a significant role as a co-manager of the Rose City Art Gallery, supporting local artists and enriching her community's cultural landscape. An award-winning artist, Deborah's work is regularly featured at the Rose City Art Gallery and has been showcased at art competitions and venues such as the Tyler Rose Garden Center and Tricia's Rose City Framing.
Her accolades extend beyond exhibitions. Deborah has been a guest on Art Connection of East Texas on KTBB Radio representing Mineola League of the Arts and has been in many articles by the Tyler Morning Telegraph and Tyler Today. In 2023, she was a featured artist in the Champion for Children fundraiser at Willow Brooks Country Club.
For Deborah, art is a sanctuary that offers healing and tranquility, while also providing a space for spiritual connection through prayer and worship. She is a firm believer in the healing power of art, a philosophy that is evident in her work and teaching. Since 2012, she has been dedicated to teaching students of all ages, breaking down complex painting principles into easy concepts, and finds that teaching fuels her own artistic development.
Her artwork, known for its palpable realism, has garnered recognition and awards, with collectors often expressing a desire to engage with her depictions. As a proponent of sharing knowledge, Deborah conducts workshops and demonstrations at various venues, including the Rose City Art Gallery and various Texas art leagues in many counties, inspiring aspiring artists with her expertise and passion.
Deborah's artwork has been highlighted in publication, the "Texas Art Connection" by Gloria Hood. Through all her endeavors, Deborah Setser remains a strong figure in Tyler's artistic community, sharing her journey of healing, faith, and the transformative power of art.
